Introduction

This temple was called Taejosan Seongburam as the sermon hall and hermitage were built by Monk Hyeseon during the reign of King Mokjong in the Goryeo Dynasty.
Seongbulsa Temple was burnt to the ground several times including during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. The zelkova tree at the temple entrance stands above a large rock, and it is reminiscent of a seated Buddha statue. The Anseo reservoir below presents a serene sight. It is also surrounded by famous tourist attractions including Gagwonsa Temple and Taejosan Park.
It’s been said that its name, Seongbulsa, was given because a pair of cranes came here from the heavens to create a Buddhist sculpture, but flew away before they finished. The Daeungjeon Hall, Sansingak and Chilseonggak presently remain on the site.
